The applications of ECA solutions in veterinary science can be ascribed to research conducted by Dr Gilbert Hinze and are based on his understanding of the challenges currently facing veterinarians, stockmen and the industry in general.
Amongst the challenges are:
1. Reduced efficacy of antimicrobials used in animals against certain pathogens.
2. The ban on the use of antibiotics in animal feeding rations.
3. Biosecurity measures due to new airborne viral agents.
4. Increased stock densities in animal rearing facilities and increased pathogen loads.
5. Water quality degradation due to source water contamination.
ECA solutions provide a complete paradigm shift due to the characteristics of the solutions. The solutions are in many instances novel, highly effective micro-biocides, yet are extremely safe and versatile in application, and no resistance by bacteria has ever been demonstrated. Applications may be divided into prevention of disease and/or the treatment of sick animals.
Environmental and Equipment Sanitation
Disease prevention in animals can be achieved by eliminating pathogens in the environment or water source before they enter the host, by means of water decontamination and air sanitation by misting or fogging. Cleaning and disinfection of buckets and teats for calves is another example. If pathogen loads are significantly reduced, chances are that the animals will not get sick, due to either their own immune response or vaccinations administered.
Fogging or misting of the airspace kills circulating viral and bacterial pathogens, reduces ammoniac levels, settles dust particles and can be used in climate control. The efficacy of the technique depends on droplet size, fogging intervals and concentration of the anolyte solution used.
Cleaning of wet walls. This can be readily achieved by the rehabilitation of compacted walls and maintenance thereafter. This intervention will guarantee unrestricted clean air flow.
Water treatment. Even if treated (chlorinated) water is supplied, biofilm grows in water supply lines. The inclusion of ECA solutions in water supply lines eliminates all pathogens and guarantees the absence of biofilm and subsequent blocking of drinking nozzles.
Disease prevention may also be accomplished by the elimination of pathogens in the upper digestive system of the animal by increasing the level of ECA solutions in the drinking water. Drinking water is therefore used as a microcide within the animal which kills pathogens in the mouth, throat, esophagus and stomach. This reduces infection levels further and prevents significant or infective dose levels entering the small intestine.
This type of disease prevention is in stark contrast to in-feed antibiotic medication. Pathogens first settle in the epithelial cells of the small intestine and are then killed by the selected antimicrobial agent, depending on resistance levels and inclusion rates. In-feed medication also leaves residues in products harvested from such animals, necessitating withdrawal periods before slaughter, and a risk of re-infection. The above hypothesis has been tested in many animals and countries across the world.
